A shortage of permanent jockeys in the North West is providing opportunities for young hoops prepared to travel.

On Saturday, two apprentices notched up victories at Buchanan Park – Mitch Goring on the Tanya Parry-trained Hi Zero, and Chloe Lowe on Parry’s Far Reaching.

Both young jockeys produced stellar rides on the outsiders to secure victory.

Goring fired out of the barriers on Hi Zero ($17) in the Benchmark 45 over 1000m and waltzed to a six-length victory. Taller than your average jockey, Goring will battle with weight throughout his career, but appears to be loving his journey in the saddle.

Lowe, in the last on the card, took a sit at the back of the field before sticking close to the rail with Far Reaching ($16) to record a strong victory on the line.

Asked about riding on the sand track, Lowe said: “I love it! It’s a great challenge – I’m getting used to it now.”
