Just three teams will take to the field in the Mount Isa Cricket Association this summer, with the Western Bulls withdrawing due to a lack of numbers.

The season began on Saturday morning as Black Stars and Cavaliers took to Sunset Oval for a T20 clash.

The MICA season is split into two, with T20 contests played until the grand final in mid-November, before the longer 30-over format takes over until March.

Cavaliers captain Stephen Squires said there were plenty of cobwebs that needed to be dusted off in the season opener.

“We started all right but then we fell apart a little bit with the bat,” he said.

“We ended up making 100 exactly but then Starries chased it down easily.”

Black Stars surpassed the tally with nine wickets in hand and more than 10 overs to spare, the Cavaliers skipper said.

“We won the T20 last year and they won the 30-over comp so it was a good clash to have first up,” Squires said.

Biding their time was Panthers, which had a bye on Saturday.

Panthers are scheduled to play Black Stars this Saturday from 9am at Sunset Oval.
