Buffs Bandits the team to beat in MIANA Div 1 grand final

Undefeated at the end of the regular season, Mount Isa Amateur Netball Association’s division one minor premiers, Buffs Bandits, are now into the grand final and chasing back-to-back titles.

The Bandits secured passage to the decider with a 41-34 win over HFG Tigers last week now wait to see who they will play in next Saturday’s grand final.

The Tigers and Good Shepherd Fire will do battle tonight (August 29) for the chance to take on the Bandits.

All senior grand finals will be played on Saturday, September 7, while the junior deciders will be staged on Friday, September 6 at Wellington Park.

Meanwhile, MIANA celebrated its minor premiers and individual award winners last week.

The Bonnie MacRae Spirit of Netball Award was presented to young gun Phoebe Ryder.

“Phoebe’s impact on Mount Isa’s netball community extends far beyond the court. For many years, she has been an integral part of MIANA, contributing not just as a player but also as a coach, umpire, and delegate,” said MIANA president Zara Kuskopf.

“Her sportsmanship and dedication shine through in her performance on court. Her commitment to MIANA is further highlighted by her work within her own club, and previously with the MIANA committee.”

Lesleigh Callaghan picked up the President’s Award for being a dependable volunteer.

“This year’s recipient has been my saving grace more times than I can count,” Kuskopf said.

“On top of that, she also plays an integral role in their own club developing others through coaching other teams and encouraging the development of other umpires.”

The senior umpire of the year was Chloe Staples, while rookie whistleblower Riley Wehlow was named junior umpire of the year.

The newly-named Jenny Tyrrell Coaching Awards went to Chelsea Barlow and Rilee Webber at junior level, while Faye Tapu picked up the senior gong.

Rachel Ratuvuku was named the winner of the Isabel Webster U17 Development Award.

“She has represented Mount Isa on multiple occasions, leaving a lasting impression wherever she goes,” Kuskopf said.

“Not only has she shown exceptional talent and commitment, but she also embodies the spirit of sportsmanship.”
