If you have ever wanted to try your hand at softball but aren’t even sure of the rules, then this weekend’s event is for you.

The Mount Isa Softball Association is hosting a ‘come and try day’ at the Alexandria Oval softball grounds from 3.30pm for juniors and 4.30pm for seniors on Saturday.

Association treasurer Karen Dredge said people of all ages are welcome to come along and find out more about the game.

She said the association was buoyed by strong interest at the recent sign on expo and the free event on Saturday was sure to be a fun afternoon for the whole family.

“Anyone who might have had an interest in playing but haven’t been involved can come along and have a go and ask any questions,” she told North West Weekly.

“All the equipment is provided so you just have to bring yourself along.

“We are very welcoming to newcomers – we lost a lot of our players during COVID and we have been trying to get the number back up for the past few years.

“After we have seen what interest we generate at the come and try day, we will then hold a multi-week social competition – it will be a modified game so any new people can learn the basics of softball and have a bit of fun.”

Zonta Rodeo Queen Quest entrant Krystal Wright will also be fundraising at the event for the Rural Fire Bridge, with a barbecue and soft drinks available to purchase.
