Flinders Shire Council rates to go up by 3.8 per cent
Mayor Kate Peddle said the council was aware of the cost-of-living pressures facing ratepayers.
Flinders Shire Council will increase residential rates by 3.8 per cent as it invests in community enhancement projects that seek to expand its local population.
Mayor Kate Peddle said the $41.5 million operating budget was underscored by a reliance on government support through funding and grants, as only 12 per cent of the council’s revenue was derived from rates and other charges.
She said the rate increase balanced cost of living pressures with the need for sustainable growth across the shire.
“We remain mindful of the cost-of-living pressures that continue to challenge families right across the Flinders Shire. The council is dedicated to investing in projects that enhance community welfare and expand our rate base over time,” Cr Peddle said.
“Our focus has been on driving sustainable growth, while ensuring that we address the needs and aspirations of our residents with fiscal responsibility.”
As previously reported, Cr Peddle said the council was seeking to leverage opportunities from the CopperString project rollout in the region with negotiations underway with Powerlink for legacy items including modern housing, airport expansion, tertiary education facilities and improved community amenities.
“With strong internal structures and new key positions in human resources, media, grants and community engagement, training and development, and compliance, we are setting the stage for improved operational efficiency and enhanced service delivery,” she said.
Cr Peddle said the council’s $13.3 million capital works budget would include council-funded projects such as the expansion of the showgrounds RV camping area and upgrades to the Hughenden recreational lake.
In a further community enhancement measure, Flinders Shire is also currently seeking expressions from individuals or businesses with suitable hospitality qualifications interested in leasing the new cafe at the Visitor Information Centre and Museum within the council-operated Flinders Discovery Centre.
The cafe forms part of the centre’s recent $4.1 million completed upgrade to meet future tourist demand.
