The thousands of locals who attended the Glencore charity concert last month have raised thousands of dollars to support cancer patients in Mount Isa.

More than 2000 locals gathered at Buchanan Park last month for a night of music, food and fun that was organised and hosted by Glencore.

The charity concert raised $16,450 for Mount Isa’s Cancer House, which provides emotional and financial aid to those suffering from a cancer diagnosis in the city.

Glencore Health Safety Environment and Community manager Jonathan Eden said the Buchanan Park event was a continuation of Glencore’s centennial celebrations as well as an avenue to promote cancer awareness month in October.

He said the concert was also focused on showcasing the local capabilities of our city.

“When looking for a charity to donate the funds of the charity concert to, we couldn’t think of a better charity to support than Cancer House,” Mr Eden told North West Weekly.

“They provide an important service in Mount Isa.

“We wanted to keep the concert as local as possible and so we engaged with local musicians, food vendors and market stall operators and they made the night the success that it was.

“We were pleased to see everyone turn up in numbers and have a good night.”

Cancer House president Paul Wragg said the donation would assist to provide hampers and some financial assistance for local cancer patients as well as pay for the upkeep of the purple house along the Alma Street crossing, which provides a much-needed meeting space for those undergoing cancer treatment and recovery.
