Allan Hazle is the new WBF World Masters Welterweight champion.

The Mount Isa boxer was awarded victory by unanimous decision at the Masters Cup in Reitberg, Germany in the early hours of Sunday morning (Australian time).

The 53-year-old orthodox fighter was strong out of the gate, dropping his opponent, 51-year-old West Australian Anthony Hawkins, with an overhand right hook in the second round.

Hawkins was back on his feet by the count of about three and the bout ended up going the distance – six, two-minute rounds.

Hazle, who had comfortably made the 66kg weight, said he favoured wearing his opponent down rather than trying to move for a fast knockout.

“I just wanted to box – I was winning every round, and I didn’t want to get impatient,” he told North West Weekly.

“The crowd was going nuts and the organisers were telling me I was the fighter of the night. They said I was just streams ahead.

“I thought the jet lag was going to affect me going into the fight – but I was feeling really good. I only had about one kilo to lose by the time I arrived in Germany.”

When North West Weekly spoke to Hazle, he was walking the streets of the western Germany city with his wife Nicki in search of a pub that was still open.

“I feel very blessed – extremely ecstatic,” he said.

Hazle will return to Mount Isa at the end of the week.
