Higgins wins again, Caban turns the tables at NQ Elite Rodeo
A Mount Isa buckle champion has continued on his winning ways in Townsville.
Mount Isa bareback champion Luke Higgins added another big deposit to his bank balance with success at the NQ Elite Rodeo in Townsville on the weekend.
The Victorian rode Puggsly for a score of 82 to be an easy winner ahead of Patrick Fraser, who recorded a 71 on Queen of Diamonds.
Meanwhile, Leanne Caban and Akka Dakka managed to bounce back from their second placing at Buchanan Park to turn the tables on sister-in-law Wendy Caban in the barrel racing.
Julia Creek product Leanne produced a slick time of 17.669 to beat Wendy and Jay Lo, who were second in a time of 18.035.
The open bull ride was claimed by Daniel Rogan after a score of 82 on Stranger Danger.
He pipped Toby Hale and Nash Jones for the buckle.
Michael Johnston added another win to his tally after success at Cloncurry by taking out the open saddle bronc with 75 points on Fools Gold, narrowly beating Callum Clement and Jayden Blacker.
It was a thriller in the steer wrestling, with Kiwi cowboy Haami Boynton getting it done by a whisker in a time of 4.55 seconds, leaving Campbell Hodson in second place after he clocked 4.60.
The aptly named Rope McPhee and Toby Hale won the team roping in 5.85 seconds, ahead of Casey Tribe and Kai Clark in 7.00.
It was Hale’s second win of the weekend after he prevailed in the Rope and Tie in a time of 9.25, more than a second ahead of Aaron Leahy, who stopped the clock in 10.95.
The breakaway roping was tense, with just hundredths of seconds splitting the top three finishers.
Jemma Dowling and Cowboy won in a time of 2.15 seconds, edging out Jorja Iker and Barney in 2.20 and Leanne Caban and Biddy in 2.25.
