After three decades of emergency department nursing experience, LifeFlight’s First Minutes Matter educator Megan Ahern has just about seen it all.

“I’ve seen men, women and children come into the emergency rooms after all sorts of accidents and disasters,” she said.

“And I can tell you that when they know the basics of trauma training, it makes all the difference in the world to their medical outcomes.

“It can impact the amount of time they spend in hospital, whether or not they have a life-long disability, or in some cases, knowing what to do in a medical emergency can mean the difference between life and death.”

The Toowoomba-based LifeFlight educator is travelling to Camooweal and Mount Isa next week to teach locals what to do in a medical emergency before help arrives.

The free six-hour workshops cost nothing but people’s time to build community resilience in the event of a medical emergency

“It’s such a valuable investment in your health and wellbeing. Our rescue crews fly out to men and women and children every single day who never thought when they woke up that morning, that they would be flying to hospital in a helicopter,” Ms Ahern said.

“Accidents happen. They happen every single day. And the content I cover in this hands-on course will arm you with the knowledge and skills you’ll need to give yourself the best possible outcome when something happens to you.”

Ms Ahern said what people did in the first few minutes after a medical emergency was crucial to their medical outcome.

“Queenslanders who live a long way away from a hospital need to think about whether they have the skills needed to know what to do in a range of medical emergencies before help arrives,” she said

“People you work with or care about could be looking to you one day to help them when something goes wrong.”

First Minutes Matter will be held on February 25 at Camooweal Post Office Hotel from 9am and in Mount Isa on February 27 at 18 Miles Street from 9am.
