Melanoma March pays tribute to much-loved Mount Isan
The community is invited to attend the walk-for-a-cause this Sunday.

Mount Isa friends Kara Thompson and Janine Emmerson will pound the pavement this Sunday as part of the Melanoma March movement, honouring the memory of Kara’s sister, Terri Grosser.
The walk will also pay tribute to others who have lost their lives or suffered from melanoma and members of the Mount Isa community are encouraged to join in.
Janine, who was close friends with Terri, shared that her father had been diagnosed with melanoma, adding another personal drive to their cause.
“The Melanoma March is an Australia-wide initiative, and in major cities, it attracts hundreds of participants,” Kara said.
“This is our second year. Last year, it was shortly after Terri passed away, so it was quite emotional.
“Janine suggested we do this again, as it was something Terri always wanted to do.”
Terri was a well-known member of the community, and her legacy continues to inspire others.
The local hospital has even named its new melanoma 360-degree skin check machine in her honour.
“Terri was very passionate about raising awareness,” Kara explained.
“People still tell me they’ve had skin checks because of her, and some have even found melanoma early.
“She’s already helped hundreds.”
The organisers hope to spark conversations about sun safety during the walk.
“It’s not about distance,” Janine said.
“We want people to wear bright colours and hats, prompting others to ask, ‘what’s that about?’ and start the conversation.”
Kara said it still frustrated her seeing people outdoors without sun protection.
“I try to remember that some people are simply unaware of the risks,” she said.
“Melanoma doesn’t discriminate. It’s a leading cause of cancer deaths for young adults.”
Janine said Terri’s passing had significantly changed how she approached sun safety.
“When I go fishing or do anything outdoors, I encourage the kids to cover up and wear hats and sunscreen. You just don’t think it’s going to happen to you, but it can.”
Sunday’s walk starts at 9.30am at Bambino Espresso on Miles Street.
Donations are welcomed, and those interested can join the Melanoma Warriors team for a $20 fee or $40 for families. Look for the Melanoma Warriors team details on Facebook.
