It will be a family affair when the curtains rise on opening night of Mount Isa Theatrical Society’s (MITS) latest anarchic production on Friday.

Four members from the same family will form almost half the ensemble cast of Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind, which promises to be a night of entertainment not for the faint-hearted.

If you find the production name to be both mysterious and a little weird, then that’s all part of the intention. A long running and highly popular stage show around the globe, the evening consists of 30 original short plays performed in 60 minutes.

Each of these “mini-plays” lasts only a few minutes and the sequence of each night’s production is left entirely to chance.

The audience is called on to select numbered productions from a “menu” which are then immediately performed by the ensemble.

Director Tyne Sacco said the fast-paced production teeters on the edge of chaos each night, which adds to the excitement of each performance.

“They are all complete plays that have a beginning, middle and end,” she explained.

“They range from horror stories to social justice issues to absurd, dadaist nonsense – they really have to be experienced to be understood.

“It is the second time we have performed this type of show and the last time the audience really got into the concept and some people returned three or four times.

“The cast have memorised 40 plays and need to be able to perform them out of order each night – we have been putting in crazy hours to be able to be ready for this.”

Tyne, who also is an actor in the ensemble, will perform alongside her three adult children, Connor, Gracie and BJ.

While all have been involved in MITS for more than a decade, she said it was the first time the family had performed together in the same production, and it is likely to also be the only time.

“BJ and his partner will be leaving Mount Isa a week after the performance ends and so we probably won’t be able to work together again like this,” Tyne said.

“It is really nice we can share this experience before he leaves.”

Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind will be performed on March 21-22, 28-29 and April 4-5. Doors open at 7pm each performance night. Tickets are $45, which includes a two-course meal.
