Mount Isa aquatic centre makes a splash over school holidays
Splashez was the place to be in December and January, according to the numbers.
The Splashez Aquatic Centre water slides have proven to be a summer hit.
With the Aqua Tower slides on offer for the first time during a summer school holiday season after being officially opened in May, centre manager Shae Donovan said more than 1200 wristbands had been handed out to adventurous slide riders since the first week of December.
Ms Donovan said North West families were even travelling to Mount Isa specifically to test out the water slides, which have operated seven days a week during the holiday period.
“We have had families from Cloncurry who are phoning us up to ask about the height requirements for the slides so that they can measure their kids before driving to Mount Isa,” she said.
More than 11,000 people have entered through the gates at the aquatic centre in total during the school holidays, which is higher than last year.
“I think it is due to slides – the number of people in the centre really increases when the slides are operating in the afternoons,” Ms Donovan said.
“But it has just been so hot that the place has been pretty packed anyway.”
An Aussie pool party will be held at Splashez on Australia Day with free entry between 10.30am and 5.30pm, Aussie-themed water aerobics at 11am, a free sausage sizzle starting at noon and the water slides open from 2pm.
The water slides will return to operating between 2pm and 5pm only on weekends when school resumes next week.
