Mount Isa residents will soon get access to faster internet speeds as work begins on rolling out fibre to the premises across the city.

Those with eligible NBN plans should see their speeds double, while some providers should be able to provide download speeds of up to 900 mbps, up from the current capacity of around 65 mbps.

Even with reduced capacity on fibre to the node, Mount Isa was last year the biggest consumer of data in regional Queensland at an average of 503 gigabytes per household each month.

Preliminary work is underway to enable the upgrades and many households should be able to get fibre to the premises by Christmas.

Minister for Communications Michelle Rowland said the federal government was determined to narrow the digital divide.

“As part of our $2.4 billion investment to upgrade 1.5 million premises to NBN full-fibre access, around 4900 premises in the Mount Isa area will become eligible to upgrade to a full-fibre connection,” the MP said.

North West Weekly understands some households will miss out on the upgrades due to the terrain in some areas of the mining city.

Locals wanting information can enter their address into the NBN website and register for updates.
