News in brief: Katter slams revenue raising camera
All of the news snippets from this week's paper.

Member for Traeger Robbie Katter says the Queensland government and the Queenland Police Service has their priorities wrong after a new camera trailer popped up in Mount Isa this week.
“Look I can’t say that encouraging people to slow down and keep off their phones in town is a bad idea, but the cost of these things just shows how skewed priorities are,” he told North West Weekly.
“While we have rampant crime in Mount Isa, instead of focusing on more police on the beat and solutions such as KAP’s Send ‘em Out Bush policy, we see these yellow revenue wagons being wheeled out!”
Mount Isa residents have taken to social media to express their bemusement at the placement of a mobile phone and seat belt monitoring camera trailer in Pamela Street.
New clinic for Camooweal
Ground was officially broken on Monday for the new $28 million Camooweal Primary Health Clinic.
North West Hospital and Health Service chief executive Sean Birgan said the new facility would be a game-changer.
“The existing health clinic has served the community well, but to meet the growing needs of Camooweal, it’s time for an upgrade,” he said.
“Investing in long-lasting infrastructure today will reduce costs in the future and enable North West residents to capitalise on high-quality care.”
Clare Newton, the executive director of remote health services said the new build would provide greater flexibility for staff.
“As the current building is over 60 years old, technology has advanced significantly and it’s important we incorporate this into the new building which is why the new design will include solar panels, updated water tanks, and a brand-new generator,” she said.
Farewell to Isa veteran
Legendary Mount Isa veteran Eileen Killeen passed away on Friday, May 31, leaving behind a long legacy of community service.
Eileen was a proud Women’s Royal Australian Air Force (WRAAF) veteran who was seen at virtually every Mount Isa Anzac Day service, laying a wreath.
Born in 1938, she was a great, great grandmother and a friend to many.
Eileen will be farewelled at a funeral service today (Thursday, June 6) at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Mount Isa from 10am. The service will be live streamed, with the Mount Isa RSL branch to post details on its Facebook page.
The sub branch will perform a poppy service at her memorial to honour Eileen and is encouraging members who knew her to attend and lay a poppy on the day.
Support for SES groups
The Mornington Island SES unit will get $114,000 for a new vehicle and facility upgrade as part of a $3.7 splurge by the state government to help the State Emergency Service across Queensland.
The Croydon SES will also get $99,000 for a new Outback SES vehicle, while Richmond is also in line to get a facility upgrade.
“This year has been exceptionally busy for emergency responders, and we know these facility upgrades and new vehicles will be welcomed by volunteers,” said Fire and Disaster Recovery Minister Nikki Boyd.
“These SES grants are an investment in disaster resilience and the well-being of Queenslanders by ensuring our orange SES army has the infrastructure and equipment it needs to fast-track community recovery.”
