Normanton geared up for biggest event in the Gulf
The action runs from Thursday to Sunday in Normanton.

More people will file through the gates of the Normanton Rodeo this weekend than the town’s population, says event stalwart Ashley Gallagher.
“It’s easily the biggest event in the Gulf,” he said.
“Put it this way, we will get about 2000 people and we only have about 1500 in Normanton.”
Gallagher isn’t the president, nor does he hold a position on the executive of the Normanton Rodeo Association, but he’s a “doer” and will work around the clock this week to make sure things are ready for the four-day event.
“I’ve been going to the rodeo here since I was a kid,” he said.
“My father (Mick) was one of the founders of the rodeo.”
The 48th annual Normanton Rodeo begins on Thursday with a camp draft and free entry.
Festivities continue in the town that afternoon with the street parade, followed by evening events at the rodeo grounds.
The main action kicks off on Friday and runs through to Sunday with bull and bronc events, as well as barrel racing and more campdrafting.
Most of the finals will be staged on Sunday.
“It’s become a really big family event,” Gallagher said.
“It’s not just about the rodeo; it also serves as our show because we’ll have all the sideshows and competitions for our produce, cakes and other bits and pieces.
“There something for everyone really – even a gymkhana for the kids.”
A three-day pass to the rodeo is $30 for an adult and $10 for kids.
