Leichhardt Services Bowls Club will play host to three days of top shelf bowls, starting from today.

The Leichhardt Services Bowls Club will host the Zone 8 Champion of Champions lawn bowls playoffs this week, starting today (Thursday) and finishing on Saturday.

The playoffs will see the best bowlers from Cairns and Townsville head to Mount Isa to battle it out for the right to represent the zone at the Queensland State Titles later this year.

North West district vice president Graham Von Hoff said it will be an exciting few days of bowls in the city with both Cairns and Townsville having current and former state representatives in their squads.

“Col Kelly, who plays for the Cairns club Edge Hill, is a former Australian representative, so he’ll be one to watch,” Von Hoff said.

The action begins at 8am today with a North West District mixed team of eight against Edge Hill Bowls Club, with the winner to make the state deciders. That contest will be followed by two games of mixed pairs between Cairns, Townsville and Mount Isa.

On Friday, from 8am, the final game of the mixed pairs will be played to determine the zone champions.

There will also be the men’s pairs final between Townsville’s Ross Austin and Cloncurry’s Damien McGee and the first game of men’s round robin singles between current state player Justin Cribbin (Jubilee Bowls Club, Townsville) and Frank Obah (Edge Hill).

Friday will also see the final of the men’s fours between Jubilee’s Ben Cribbin, Justin Cribbin, Jacob Chives and Nathaniel Cuzner, who will take on the combined team of Cloncurry’s Damien McGee, Mark Curren, Nathan Barrett and Leichhardt Services’ Graham Von Hoff.

After a short break, Von Hoff will then back-up to play the second men’s singles round robin game.

On Saturday, the division one men’s pennant teams will vie for glory. Jubilee and Edge Hill will go head-to-head first.

The pennant format involves each club fielding three teams of four players, with overall shots determining the winner.

The winner of Jubilee-Edge Hill will earn a break, while Mount Isa Bowls Club takes on the loser and then the winner in back-to-back matches.

“It’ll be a great few days of bowls and we’ll have the bar running so please come down for a look if you are interested,” Von Hoff said.

“I’m expecting the North West bowlers to put on a good display against the coastal clubs.

“It’s a great thing for Mount Isa and our bowlers.”
