The Mount Isa Hospital finance department let its inner Grinch shine to steal the grand champion award in the 2024 North West Hospital and Health Service Christmas Decoration Competition.

Sponsored by the Mount Isa Hospital Auxiliary, the annual event sees hospital staff creatively transform their workspaces, spreading holiday joy to patients, visitors, and health workers.

The competition received 21 entries this year from hospital and health departments across the North West, including from Cloncurry and Mornington Island, with staff encouraged to construct their arrangements under one of four themes – Traditional Christmas; Lights Camera Action (Christmas-themed films and television), The Grinch Who Stole Christmas; or North West Christmas.

The top award was presented to the NWHHS finance department, which selected a Grinch theme – complete with train sets overflowing with money, rows of Christmas trees and a life-size sleigh.

Mount Isa Hospital Auxiliary member Jessie Henderson said it was wonderful to see the creativity and care that our hospital staff put into their decorations.

“It’s not just about decorating a space, it’s about making the hospital feel like home during the festive season,” she said.

NWHHS chief executive Sean Birgan praised the effort and enthusiasm of the staff involved in the competition. He said the community-driven initiative continues to be a highlight of the Christmas season, bringing much-needed cheer to the hospital during a time that can be difficult for many.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Mount Isa Hospital Auxiliary for their ongoing support of this event,” Mr Birgan said.

“Our staff put in so much effort to create a festive atmosphere for everyone, particularly those who are spending time in hospital over Christmas.”

The Mount Isa Hospital Auxiliary generously donated chocolates for all participants, hampers for the major category winners, and a catered luncheon for the grand champion.
