Orthopaedic surgery returns to Mount Isa
North West Hospital and Health Service has teamed up with a Brisbane counterpart to bring the service locally.

Orthopaedic surgery has returned to Mount Isa Hospital, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing collaboration between health organisations.
As part of the partnership between North West Hospital and Health Service and Metro South Health, a Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Hospital orthopaedic surgeon and nurse will travel to Mount Isa every three months.
Each visit will include an elective surgery list of around 10 low-complex procedures, followed by a day-long outpatient clinic.
The visiting orthopaedic specialists are the same clinicians currently providing weekly telehealth services to the region.
Patients will be assessed and selected based on their suitability for receiving surgery locally.
While this new service expands local access, existing referral pathways will remain in place. Category one patients will be referred to Townsville, while category two and three patients requiring more complex or timely procedures will still be managed at QEII Hospital in Brisbane.
The first orthopaedic surgery back in Mount Isa was this month, on April 3.
