More than 300 children across 10 schools in Mount Isa, Cloncurry and the School of the Air are set to take centre stage for the Apex Rock Pop Mime Show on Friday.

The popular family event, which can see a crowd of more than 5000 descend on Tony White Oval, will feature 13 acts.

The theme of each performance is decided by the school, with popular entries in the past including Disney movies like Frozen, classic children’s novels such as Matilda, family favourites such as Grease and even songs about Mount Isa by Slim Dusty and John Williamson.

Apex Rock Pop Mine Show chair Sue Davis says the family event brings back fond memories for many across Mount Isa and Cloncurry.

“I was at the pharmacy the other day and I was talking to one of the girls behind the counter about the Rock Pop and she began telling me about her school performances when she was younger,” she said.

“I think the kids create great memories being part of the Rock Pop – that’s why we try to make it a family friendly event that is affordable – we purposely keep the entry prices as low as possible to make it an affordable night out for families.

“The kids prepare for the event for weeks in advance. Some kids are not academic, but they do have creative or musical ability, and the show allows them to be themselves on stage.”

The gates at Tony White Oval will open at 5pm, with the show beginning at about 7pm. There will a wide selection of food available for purchase on the night.

Entry for the event is $5 per person – with free entry for children aged under three.
