The population of Richmond will likely double this week as hundreds converge on the small North West community for the annual Richmond Field Days.

“It’s the biggest event we have in Richmond every year,” said an overworked Richmond Turf Club president Nick Buick.

“It’s shaping up really well this year, too. We have more than 110 exhibitors booked, which is a good number.”

The Richmond Field Days are held on Friday and Saturday, with exhibits running on both days.

The event winds up with the traditional race meeting on Saturday afternoon.

“Friday is about the exhibitors and Saturday is about the racing,” Mr Buick said.

“What I love most about it is that we have something for everyone at the field days. It’s a great community event.

“If you are a farmer or a truckie, or a little kid – there will be something there for you.”

This is the 39th running of the Richmond Field Days and Mr Buick, who is into his third year as president, said it was all hands on deck to get ready for the arrivals.

“Every year it’s a train smash but we love it,” he said.

“We don’t do it for ourselves we do it for the community.”

Mr Buick hoped the Richmond Field Days would be supported by the greater North West population.

“I know it’s a busy time of year with lots on, but we welcome everyone,” he said.

“We can’t change our dates because they are dictated to us by Queensland Racing, but we understand that there is a fair bit going on in the region.

“We’ve had clashes with the Normanton Rodeo and the Winton Show in the past, so we just make the best of what we have.”

There will be a large range of stallholders at the Richmond Field Days, including activities for the kids, as well as food and a bar.

Some of the highlights include the lawn mower derby, whip cracking competitions, fashions on the field at the race meeting, plus a fireworks display on Saturday.
