Rugby union's revival in the North West
Rugby clinics and matches in Cloncurry, plus the launch of a 7s series in Mount Isa, has the sport in good stead.

Future Wallabies and Wallaroos were put through their paces in Cloncurry on Friday afternoon as rugby union attempts to make a comeback in the North West.
Queensland Country Rugby Union, with the backing of the Cloncurry Rugby Union club, put on a free junior clinic at Eddie Lee Field, which was supported by a busload of youngsters from Mount Isa’s City and Country club.
On Saturday, Cloncurry Rugby Union hosted a men’s 10s and women’s 7s tournament, which drew good crowds.
The competition was fierce on the field, with the Mount Isa Warriors “Blue” taking out the men’s final, while the Cloncurry Sheagles won the women’s event.
With the Queensland Reds one of the strongest teams in Super Rugby and the Wallabies starting to win matches on the international stage, rugby union is making a revival across the country.
The defunct Mount Isa Rugby Union competition is also harnessing the sport’s momentum and will this Saturday kick off the first of five “World 7s” clusters.
Local teams representing New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Tonga and Samoa will take to the field in a series of matches.
