Thousands of plants were handed out to Mount Isa residents on Saturday as part of the annual Go Green Isa event.

Despite the cold morning, people turned out in droves at Buchanan Park – albeit well rugged up – to collect their plants and take part in the activities and workshops.

Diane Turner was there bright and early to make sure she could browse the offerings put on by the council before making a tough decision on what to take home.

“I’ve been coming to this for years and some of the plants have really taken off at home,” she said.

“My place is well known ... I’ve had people come to take photographs of the garden.

“It’s a great initiative by the council and it’s great to see so many people here.”

As part of Go Green Isa, special guest Phil Dudman, who is the horticultural editor of the ABC’s Gardening Australia held compost and worm farm workshops, which proved to be extremely popular.
