Blink and you might miss Jane Ryan in the arena on Friday as she looks to continue her golden run in the North West.

The breakaway roping champ says it will take just a couple of seconds for a winner to emerge at the Curry Merry Muster as more than 60 competitors vie for the huge prize pool that should have more than $15,000 in the kitty.

“There is a phenomenal amount of money to be won; money that can make a difference in your week to week life,” said Ryan, who won in Cloncurry in 2021 and 2022 and had wins in Mount Isa in 2014 and 2023.

“I think I did it in 1.95 to win the first one (in Cloncurry) and 2.05 for the second year.

“The thrilling and heartbreaking thing about breakaway roping is that it’s so fast and there is no time to make mistakes.”

Ryan will bring husband Aaron and their two kids Lexi, 4, and Georgie, 2, on the road for the prestigious rodeo circuit, which will end in Townsville.

Aaron is known in the North West for his calling of the timed events at the Merry Muster and Ryan said it would be good to have him by her side for the trip.

“Me and the girls are away almost every weekend and he stays at home most of the time,” the Chinchilla roper said.

“But we all come up for this trip and finish in Townsville with a bit of sun and sand.”

But the most important companion will be “Deadly” the top horse who has accompanied Ryan for her recent North West wins.

“To look at him ... he’s quite plain but he’s got great athletic ability and a huge big heart,” she said of her steed.

“He’s got everything that you can’t train – he tries 120 per cent every time we get into the arena.”
